25 Ways to Earn Qantas Points

Qantas is one of the biggest loyalty programs in Australia with up to 50% of Australians being members! If you haven’t enrolled yet that is definitely the first step and we’ve put together a list of ways you can join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free saving the $99.50 joining fee.

Initially the only way to earn points was through flying, these days around 40% of all points are earned on the ground and there are some really great options out there to earn points in your everyday life. We’ve put together a list of 25 ways to earn Qantas Points and to make it easier we’ve split it into 6 categories.

Transport

This is almost definitely the first thing people think of when think of Qantas points. However, on top of flying you can earn points for driving and going on cruises!

Flying

We’ll start with the most obvious way to earn points, you can earn Qantas Points when flying with Qantas! You can also earn points flying with oneworld airlines including Finnair and Qatar Airways as well as partnered airlines such as Emirates.

The amount of points earned will depend on how far you are flying as well as the class of cabin you have purchased. Earn rate also goes up based on your status level and loyalty bonus.

No matter how far you fly you are guaranteed a minimum of 800 Qantas Points on every eligible economy Qantas flight, 1,200 points on flexible economy or premium economy and at least 1,400 Qantas Points for business or first class Qantas flights.

Car Hire

You can earn points by booking car hire through Avis or Budget and the rates for this are different for international and domestic bookings.

  • Domestic bookings earn 4 Qantas Points per $ spent.
  • International bookings earn a flat rate of 700 Qantas Points per booking.

There are also frequently updated special promotions available so check it out before you book!

Uber

Uber earn is somewhat limited in that you can only earn points to and from eligible Australian airports but it is still a handy bonus of 1 Qantas Point per $ spent. If you pay for you Uber with a Qantas credit card you can double up on your earn as well!

Additionally, if you are new to Uber you can earn 2,000 bonus Qantas Points by signing up.

Cruises

If Covid put your cruising holiday on hold this could be a great opportunity to stock up on some extra points. Qantas has partnered with 22 cruise lines and 178 ships to provide 15,000 cruise itineraries!  This includes well known brands such as P&O and Royal Caribbean as well as luxury cruises like Celebrity Cruises and Cunard Line. You can earn 1 QP per $ spent on eligible cruises, and Qantas will sometimes offer last minute deals as well.

Accommodation

Once you’ve arrived at your new destination you’ll need somewhere to stay! Fortunately Qantas makes it easy to collect points here as well.

Hotels

By booking a hotel through Qantas Hotels you can earn 3 Qantas Points per dollar spent. There are also often promotions available increasing this to 6 Qantas Points per dollar! Qantas has partnered with a large range of hotels and if you do find a better deal on the same property Qantas offers a price promise which is a price match as well as 1,000 Qantas Points for your troubles.

Airbnb

As well as hotels you can book Airbnb through the Qantas portal. This earns significantly fewer points at 1 Qantas point per dollar spent and there are very rarely promotions. The flip side of course is that the Airbnb will often be cheaper or a different experience than the hotel! Let us know which you prefer in the comments.

Luxury Escapes

Luxury Escapes focuses on finding deals on luxury accommodation at reasonable prices and they’ve recently extended to tours as well. If you book through their website you can earn 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent.

Finance

Other than flying this is one of the most popular ways to earn points, especially through credit card spend and sign up bonuses.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are my favourite way to earn points, they are one of the quickest and easiest ways to rack up big points. What makes them appealing is that you don’t need to do anything extra, through everyday spending you can earn thousands of points. And with a bit more effort and research into the sign up bonuses you can boost your points balance very quickly. These often give tens of thousands of Qantas points for new card holders upon meeting spending criteria.

Just make sure you compare the options well and think about whether a credit card is the right choice for you.

Transaction/Savings Accounts

As well as offering a high earning credit card, Bankwest also have a savings and transaction account where you earn 0.3 Qantas Points for every $100 in your account each day on balances up to $50,000. The points on spend are particularly appealing as this is a HUGE 3 Qantas Points per dollar spent on eligible transactions. This compares very favourably with the 0.5-1.25 Qantas Points you will typically earn with credit card spend. So if you are looking to earn points on your everyday spend without a credit card Bank West is a great way to do it.

Home Loans

Qantas Money have a home loan that provides 100,000 Qantas Points a year. Current variable rates for Qantas Money is 5.79% which is reasonably competitive. As a home loan is the biggest expense for most people, it is really important to look at rates, fees and other conditions before making a decision on a home loan provider.

Travel Money

If you have a Qantas Frequent Flyer card you are halfway to having Qantas Money as they use the same card! Qantas Money works by loading up on foreign currency directly or with AUD that you can then use overseas. Qantas Money also offers the option of locking in the exchange rate for up to 10 different currencies for peace of mind.

In terms of earn rate, you can earn 1.5 points per $1 spent in foreign currencies and 0.25 points per $1 spent in Australia. At the moment there is also a promotion where you can earn up to a bonus 30,000 Qantas Points and have the chance to win an amazing shopping experience to New York, flying business class! Hurry, the offer ends the 29th of September.

Travel Insurance

Qantas offers their own travel insurance which can provide both peace of mind and extra Qantas Points when traveling. The earn rate with Qantas travel insurance is 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent on both domestic and international policies.

Real Estate

This is a fairly unique way of earning points and won’t be a big contributor to almost any point balance, but we’re all about thoroughness here! If you list and sell your residential property exclusively with LJ Hooker you can earn 20,000 Qantas Points. Similarly, if you’re a landlord, you can earn 10,000 Qantas Points for each new management of a residential property.

Food and Entertainment

One of the big draws of the Qantas loyalty system is that you can accumulate points for doing everyday things like eating out or seeing a movie!

Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group restaurants

You can sadly no longer earn points by booking through Quandoo, however you can still earn Qantas Points by dining out at a range of restaurants including the Meat & Wine Co, 6Head, Hunter & Barrel, Ribs & Burgers and Italian Street Kitchen.

See a movie at Hoyts

By joining Hoyts Rewards and linking your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership you can earn up to 2 Qantas Point per $1 spent on tickets and at the candy bar.

Hello Fresh food orders

Qantas has partnered with Hello Fresh to offer up to 20,000 Qantas Points for new customers over 10 weeks.  If you subscribe to a weekly HelloFresh plan you can earn 2,000 bonus points on each of your first 10 boxes using the promo code QANTAS20K.

Qantas Wine

If you need a drink to go with your food delivery Qantas Wine has you covered. You’ll earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent or 3 points per $1 spent on Qantas Wines if you’re a Qantas Wine Premium Member. Additionally, Qantas Wine regularly has bonus point offers letting you get thousands of extra points on case purchases.

Shopping

The Qantas Mall

Qantas has partnered with hundreds of stores to create the Qantas Mall. This is a portal where you can log in then visit your preferred online shop and earn bonus points for every dollar spent. The point earn will be different for each store but can be as high as 6 Qantas Points per dollar spent. Plus, if you use a Qantas earning credit card, you can double up on this.

It can be hard to remember to log in before buying things, so Qantas has also made a toolbar to remind you to login.

Eligible members include David Joans, Ebay, Asos and many many more!

Woolworths

If you’re already a member of the Woolworth Rewards program, or when signing up, you can choose to link your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. After linking your accounts you can convert rewards points to Qantas Points at the rate of 2,000 Everyday Rewards Points for 1,000 Qantas Points.

The earn rate on Woolworths Rewards is one point per dollar spent which makes the base earn rate 0.43 Qantas Points per dollar spent. This is relatively low but it stacks with Qantas Points you’re earning with your credit or debit card. There are also often specials or promotions that can boost your points earned so keep an eye out for those!
